Microwave Oatmeal with Milk

Wholesome, family-friendly, and perfect for an everyday breakfast! Making oatmeal in the microwave saves you a ton of time in the morning — no standing over the stove stirring, no watching it so the milk doesn't boil over or scorch. The microwave does all the work, and the oatmeal comes out every bit as good as the stovetop version.

Cooking method

Cooking time: 16 min
  1. Step 1:

    Step 1

How do you make microwave oatmeal with milk? Gather your ingredients. You can use any oats you like — quick-cooking or old-fashioned. Old-fashioned oats keep more texture, while quick oats cook up softer. Use cow's or goat's milk in whatever fat content suits your taste and budget. The richer the milk, the tastier (and more calorie-dense) the oatmeal.

  2. Step 2:

    Step 2

Take a deep microwave-safe bowl and add the oats. Pour in the water and add the salt. Microwave on high for 5 minutes (mine is 1000 watts) and wait for the beep. If your microwave is less powerful, add 2–3 minutes.

  3. Step 3:

    Step 3

Carefully take the bowl out of the microwave (watch out — it's hot!) and pour in the milk. Stir well, since the oatmeal can stick to the bottom and scorch.

  4. Step 4:

    Step 4

Add sugar to taste and stir.

  5. Step 5:

    Step 5

Return the bowl to the microwave and cook on high for 3 more minutes. After it beeps, let the oatmeal sit inside for another 3 minutes.

  6. Step 6:

    Step 6

Take out the bowl and spoon the oatmeal into bowls right away. Add a pat of butter if you like. Enjoy!

  • By now everyone knows oatmeal is great for you, especially at breakfast — there's a reason the Brits are so fond of it. It cooks quickly on the stove, but you have to keep a constant eye on it so the milk doesn't boil over and the oats don't scorch. You can also make oatmeal with just water, or with coconut milk if you're avoiding lactose. And it's endlessly adaptable — top it with berries, fruit, honey, or any syrup or jam you like, and it'll taste a little different every time.
  • Keep in mind that microwaves vary. The cooking time and power setting may differ from what's listed here, so check your appliance's manual and adjust for your own model.
  • For the best flavor, use filtered or bottled water that's neutral-tasting. Tap water can give the dish an off taste.
  • You can swap the sugar for a heat-stable sweetener.
