Non-Alcoholic Mulled "Wine" with Grape Juice, Apple, and Citrus Zest

A fragrant drink to warm you up on cold winter evenings! Mulled wine is famously good for you, especially when you've caught a cold, which makes it a favorite in the colder months. Classic mulled wine has alcohol — but this version is gentle enough for kids to enjoy. Give it a try!

Cooking method

Cooking time: 30 min
  1. Step 1:

    Step 1

Get your ingredients ready. I used natural red grape juice, but a grape-based fruit blend, or apple, cherry, or any other juice you like will work. Homemade juice is best. If you buy it at the store, choose a 100% natural product with no dyes or flavor enhancers.

  2. Step 2:

    Step 2

Pour the grape juice and water into an enameled pot (avoid aluminum cookware).

  3. Step 3:

    Step 3

Wash any store-bought fruit and soak it in warm water for 3–5 minutes to remove the preservatives used on the peel, then pat dry with paper towels. Grate the orange zest on a medium or fine grater and add it to the juice.

  4. Step 4:

    Step 4

Now add the grated lemon zest.

  5. Step 5:

    Step 5

Wash a small tart apple. Cut it into small cubes and add it to the pot.

  6. Step 6:

    Step 6

Add the rinsed raisins. There's no need to soak them first — they'll soften as the drink cooks.

  7. Step 7:

    Step 7

    Add the allspice berries.

  8. Step 8:

    Step 8

Add a whole cinnamon stick, or about 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon.

  9. Step 9:

    Step 9

    Add the dried cloves.

  10. Step 10:

    Step 10

Add ground ginger — or take a piece of fresh ginger root, grate it on a fine grater, or cut 2–3 thin slices.

  11. Step 11:

    Step 11

    Add ground cardamom.

  12. Step 12:

    Step 12

Heat the mulled "wine" over low heat, bringing it almost to a boil (about 160–170°F / 70–75°C). It's important not to let it actually boil, or it will lose its flavor. As soon as the first bubbles appear on the surface, turn off the heat. Cover the pot and let it steep for about 5 minutes. Strain through a fine sieve and pour into mulled-wine mugs or simple ceramic cups. Help yourself!

  • For extra flavor, you can add half an orange sliced into rounds, a few lemon slices, two star anise pods, a pinch of nutmeg, or 2 sprigs of thyme.
  • Go easy on the spices so you don't overdo it. Less is better than more, or the flavor will be ruined. If you like, sweeten the drink with sugar or honey to taste.
  • This drink doesn't have to be served hot in cold weather. You can chill it, drop in some pre-frozen ice cubes, and drink it in the heat of summer — very refreshing!
