Kelganovka Liqueur with Moonshine
An original, savory flavor for the holiday table! Kelganovka liqueur made with moonshine is tart, moderately bitter, with coffee notes and a subtle sweetness, plus a knockout aroma. In terms of strength, it's more of a man's drink. But I'm sure many a hardy lady will enjoy it too.
Cooking method
-
Step 1:
How do you make Kelganovka liqueur with moonshine? Gather the ingredients and a tall container to make the liqueur in. Ideally it should have measurement markings. Add the crushed dried tormentil root (also known as galangal, or erect cinquefoil) to the container.
-
Step 2:
Next add the dried licorice root to the container (also called liquorice root or licorice).
-
Step 3:
Put the coffee beans in there too. For this amount of moonshine, I recommend adding at least ten whole coffee beans. That way both the taste and the aroma will be amazing.
-
Step 4:
And finally, pour the moonshine over the dry mixture.
-
Step 5:
Cover the container with a paper napkin and leave it to mature for at least seven to ten days. Stir the liqueur once a day during that time.
-
Step 6:
This is how the Kelganovka should look by the second day of maturing. After ten days, strain the liqueur through several layers of cheesecloth. That's the end of the process: the liqueur is ready to serve.
- Tormentil root has plenty of beneficial properties and is widely used in folk medicine. Kelganovka (or kalganovka) is made with either dried or fresh tormentil rhizomes. Use 10-15% less of the fresh roots than the recipe states. These roots give the liqueur a beautiful cognac color and a pleasant astringency. I have no trouble buying dried tormentil and licorice at the nearest pharmacy. Many people don't like the taste of licorice, but in this liqueur it's understated and only faintly noticeable. You can replace it with honey. The finished liqueur will be 2-3 proof lower than the original spirit if you used dry rhizomes; with fresh ones, lower still. Kelganovka boasts a gorgeous aroma and a very interesting taste. After trying it once, we make it again and again. The only thing to remember is that excessive alcohol consumption is bad for your health. Everything in moderation. Enjoy the tasting!
