Cooking method

  1. Step 1:

    Step 1

How do you make a no-bake holiday dessert quickly and deliciously? Very easily! First, get the ingredients ready according to the list. It's very important to choose the right dulce de leche. These days they sell all sorts. Good dulce de leche should have 8.5% fat and be thick. Shake the can before buying — the contents shouldn't slosh around. If you hear a sloshing sound, the dulce de leche is poor quality. I made mine from scratch* (see under the recipe).

  2. Step 2:

    Step 2

Put the cornflakes in a bowl. If the flakes are large, crush them a bit with your hands. Cornflakes can be frosted or plain, thin or sturdier. Use whichever you like, but keep in mind that the dish will be higher in calories with frosted flakes, and combined with the dulce de leche the dessert may turn out cloyingly sweet.

  3. Step 3:

    Step 3

Finely chop the walnuts with a knife or grind them in a blender. Instead of walnuts, you can use any other nuts you like: hazelnuts, almonds, peanuts, pecans, etc. Dulce de leche makes a very interesting combination with salted roasted peanuts.

  4. Step 4:

    Step 4

In a bowl, combine the cornflakes and chopped nuts. Mix.

  5. Step 5:

    Step 5

    Add the dulce de leche.

  6. Step 6:

    Step 6

Mix the mixture thoroughly. The dulce de leche should coat all the flakes and nuts evenly.

  7. Step 7:

    Step 7

With damp hands, shape the mixture into cone-shaped pinecones. You can also form the cones in suitably cone-shaped glasses: just fill them with the dessert mixture and pack it down well. I didn't have glasses like that, so I shaped them by hand. It made 8 treats. Put the finished cones in the refrigerator for 3 hours. After that time, if you used glasses to shape the dessert, turn the cones out onto a dish.

  8. Step 8:

    Step 8

Lightly dust the finished cones with powdered sugar and serve. Enjoy!

  • Choose a good-quality, trusted condensed milk — one with no vegetable fats or additives. The ingredient list should have just two things: milk and sugar. The taste and quality of the finished dessert ultimately depend on the quality of the condensed milk.
  • *How do you make dulce de leche at home? Put the can in a deep pot and fill it with water so the water rises 2–3 cm above the can. Set it over medium heat and bring it to a boil. Cook for 2–2.5 hours. Just make sure the water level doesn't drop and leave the can exposed, since it could simply burst from overheating. So top up with boiling water in time, keeping the can fully submerged at all times.
