Fluffy Kefir Flatbreads
Easy-to-make flatbreads with kefir. Kefir flatbreads are very simple to prepare — they can stand in for bread and go beautifully with soups. This recipe is budget-friendly too, using ingredients every home cook already has on hand.
Cooking method
-
Step 1:
Pour 200 ml (about 3/4 cup) of kefir into a bowl (the fat content doesn't matter).
-
Step 2:
Then add 2 eggs.
-
Step 3:
Add 50 ml (about 3.5 tbsp) of vegetable oil.
-
Step 4:
Then add 1 teaspoon of salt.
-
Step 5:
Add 2 tablespoons of sugar.
-
Step 6:
Mix the ingredients together thoroughly.
-
Step 7:
Add 1 packet of baking powder (mine holds 18 grams).
-
Step 8:
Sift 500 g (about 4 cups) of wheat flour into the mixture. You may need a little more flour than the recipe calls for.
-
Step 9:
Knead the dough. Don't work in too much flour — the dough should stay soft and tender. Start by mixing with a whisk, and once the flour has absorbed most of the liquid, switch to kneading by hand. To keep the dough from sticking, oil your hands with a little vegetable oil.
-
Step 10:
Cover with plastic wrap and let the dough rest for 10 minutes.
-
Step 11:
Lightly flour your work surface and turn the dough out onto it. Divide the dough into several pieces (I got 8 flatbreads about 7 inches / 18 cm across).
-
Step 12:
Shape each piece of dough into a ball, then roll each one out into a flatbread about 1/4 inch (6 to 7 mm) thick.
-
Step 13:
Make a few small slashes in the center of each flatbread.
-
Step 14:
Fry the flatbreads in well-heated vegetable oil over medium heat.
-
Step 15:
Fry until golden brown on both sides. Take the finished flatbreads out of the pan and lay them on paper towels to absorb the excess oil.
-
Step 16:
Your fluffy kefir flatbreads are ready! Serve them cold or hot. Enjoy!
- These kefir flatbreads fry up in a skillet and take hardly any time to make. They come out soft, airy, light, and delicious — finger-licking good — and are best served piping hot. Serve them in place of bread alongside soups and main dishes, or with hot tea or milk — really appetizing and tasty. Crispy fried crust on the outside, airy crumb inside.
