Swedish Meatballs Like at IKEA

Tasty, juicy meatballs with a delicate gravy and lingonberry jam! Swedish meatballs are a dish many shoppers at IKEA stores will recognize. It's quite popular, despite what may seem at first like an unusual combination. These are meatballs traditionally served with lingonberry jam and a creamy gravy. The lingonberry jam doesn't clash with the dish at all — on the contrary, it adds a special, refined touch that harmonizes beautifully with the other components.

Cooking method

  1. Step 1:

    Step 1

How do you make Swedish meatballs like at IKEA? Get your ingredients ready. Despite the long list, they're all simple and easy to find. For especially juicy, tender, tasty meatballs, it's best to use equal parts ground pork and beef. You can use store-bought ground meat or grind it yourself in a meat grinder.

  2. Step 2:

    Step 2

Peel the onion, chop it finely with a knife, and fry it in vegetable oil until golden.

  3. Step 3:

    Step 3

Besides the ground meat, breadcrumbs and boiled potato go in to keep the finished meatballs juicy. Wash and peel the potato, cut it into a few pieces, and boil it in salted water as you would for mashed potatoes. Drain the water, mash the potato, and let it cool a little. Put the ground meat, potato, and onion in a bowl.

  4. Step 4:

    Step 4

Add the breadcrumbs, pour in a little milk, add the softened (or melted and cooled to room temperature) butter, and beat in the egg.

  5. Step 5:

    Step 5

Add salt and ground black pepper to taste. Mix the mixture thoroughly until the meat is uniform. Shape it into small meatballs and roll them in breadcrumbs.

  6. Step 6:

    Step 6

In a skillet, heat the butter and vegetable oil together. Add the meatballs.

  7. Step 7:

    Step 7

Fry them on all sides over high heat until browned. Then transfer them to a parchment-lined baking sheet and finish them in the oven at 180°C (355°F) for about 20 minutes.

  8. Step 8:

    Step 8

Make the creamy gravy for the meatballs. Put the butter in a skillet and melt it, then add the wheat flour and quickly stir so it doesn't form lumps. Right away, pour in a little water while stirring. Then pour in the cream, stirring again. When the sauce is smooth and thick enough, add spices to taste. Stir and take it off the heat.

  9. Step 9:

    Step 9

Make the lingonberry jam. Wash the berries, put them in a small pot, crush them, add the sugar and a little water, set it on the heat, and cook over low heat until slightly thickened. Take the jam off the heat and let it cool.

  10. Step 10:

    Step 10

Serve the meatballs with the cream sauce and the lingonberry jam. Enjoy!
