Cooking method

Cooking time: 20 min
  1. Step 1:

    Step 1

How do you fry chicken liver with onions? Start by gathering the ingredients you'll need. Rinse the chicken liver under running water and lay it on a paper towel to blot off the excess moisture.

  2. Step 2:

    Step 2

Peel the onions and rinse them in cold water. Cut them into half-rings or a little smaller. Don't chop them too fine, though — the onion cooks down a lot and would all but disappear.

  3. Step 3:

    Step 3

Cut the chicken liver into large pieces.

  4. Step 4:

    Step 4

Heat the skillet until it's good and hot and pour in a little vegetable oil. Add the sliced onion and fry it over low heat for 1 to 2 minutes, until translucent.

  5. Step 5:

    Step 5

Now add the prepared chicken liver to the pan. Stir it together with the onion and cook for 9 to 10 minutes, stirring now and then. Chicken liver cooks very quickly, so don't let it dry out.

  6. Step 6:

    Step 6

To check for doneness, break open the largest piece. There should be no pink juices inside — cooked liver is an even gray throughout. To be safe, hold it over the heat another minute. Season the liver with a little salt and ground pepper to taste.

  7. Step 7:

    Step 7

The chicken liver with onions is ready! Mashed potatoes or boiled rice make the ideal side. Spoon it onto plates and serve. Enjoy!

  • Here's an easy way to tell whether the oil is hot enough: dip a wooden spatula into it. If bubbles gather around it, you're ready to start frying.
  • Since everyone's tolerance for salty, sweet, bitter, spicy, sour, and pungent flavors is different, always add spices and seasonings to your own taste. If you're using a seasoning for the first time, keep in mind that some are especially easy to overdo — chili pepper, for one.
  • One more thing: the wrong pan can ruin even the best recipe. Choosing the right skillet for different dishes makes a real difference.
