- We used to know figs only as a dried fruit. Now fresh figs are sold in both supermarkets and markets, you'll find them on restaurant and café menus, and they're delicious in all kinds of dishes, from appetizers to desserts. The fig is a subtropical deciduous ficus. The fig tree (also called the common fig) has a spreading crown with large, lobed leaves. It's a long-lived tree that can bear fruit for up to 200 years. The fig has been known to humans since deep antiquity. According to the Bible, Adam and Eve covered their nakedness with fig leaves, and the founders of Rome, Romulus and Remus, were suckled by a she-wolf under a fig tree. In ancient India, the fig was considered the tree of knowledge, under whose canopy the truth was revealed to the Buddha. The fig was first cultivated in the fertile part of southern Arabia and later spread to Judea, Syria, and the Mediterranean. In ancient Greece it appeared around a thousand years BC and was regarded as a symbol of fertility. At the festivals in honor of Dionysus, a basket of figs was always placed beside the vessel of wine.
