Cooking method

  1. Step 1:

    Step 1

Get your ingredients ready. Use any hot dogs you like, any size or flavor — I went with small ones. For the yeast dough, you can use store-bought (about 250 grams is enough) or your own favorite recipe, or use the one I give here. Have a skillet ready for frying.

  2. Step 2:

    Step 2

Warm the milk. Stir the sugar and yeast into the warm milk until they dissolve. Let it sit somewhere warm for 20 minutes, until a foamy cap forms.

  3. Step 3:

    Step 3

Add the egg, sifted flour, and salt to the activated yeast and knead the dough. It should come out smooth and elastic. Grease a bowl with vegetable oil, transfer the dough in, cover with plastic wrap, and set it in a warm spot to rise for 40 to 60 minutes.

  4. Step 4:

    Step 4

Punch down the risen dough and turn it out onto a floured surface. Divide it into pieces of about 2 to 2.5 ounces (50–70 g) each — no bigger, or the dough may not cook through. Roll each piece into a flat oval and lay a hot dog on it.

  5. Step 5:

    Step 5

Wrap the dough around the hot dog from both sides, then roll it between your palms to seal it into a neat log. Wrap all the hot dogs the same way.

  6. Step 6:

    Step 6

Heat vegetable oil in a skillet. Add the wrapped hot dogs and fry them on each side over medium heat until golden. Don't use high heat — they may brown on the outside before the dough cooks through. Set the finished ones on a paper-towel-lined plate to blot the excess oil.

  7. Step 7:

    Step 7

Serve the pigs in a blanket hot or cold. They're great for breakfast, a light snack, or to pack for school or work.

  • We loved these, of course — who doesn't love a hot dog? So if you pick good, tasty hot dogs, they'll taste just as good wrapped in dough. Kids especially will be thrilled with them.
