Pan-Fried Apples

A simple, fragrant dessert made from seasonal apples! Looking for another way to use up apples? Let's fry them! This dessert works with tea or coffee, or even over ice cream — though the apples are delicious all on their own. I really recommend giving it a try!

Cooking method

Cooking time: 20 min
  1. Step 1:

    Step 1

Gather all your ingredients. Use sweet apples; if yours are tart, add a little sugar to the flour. No ground ginger on hand? Feel free to swap in fresh ginger root — just peel and grate it first. If you like, add other dessert-friendly spices: star anise, vanilla, or nutmeg.

  2. Step 2:

    Step 2

Mix the flour with the ground or grated ginger. This is also the point to stir in any other dessert spices you enjoy.

  3. Step 3:

    Step 3

Core the apples and cut them into wedges. If they're homegrown, you can leave the peel on — most of the vitamins and minerals are right in the skin. Store-bought apples, though, are often coated in food-grade wax, so those are better peeled.

  4. Step 4:

    Step 4

Dredge each apple wedge well in the flour mixture.

  5. Step 5:

    Step 5

Melt the butter in a skillet over low heat.

  6. Step 6:

    Step 6

Lay each floured apple wedge in the hot butter and fry for about 7 minutes over low heat.

  7. Step 7:

    Step 7

Then flip the apples and fry the other side for another 7 to 10 minutes.

  8. Step 8:

    Step 8

Arrange the fried apple wedges on a serving plate, dust with cinnamon, and serve.

  9. Step 9:

    Enjoy!

  • I serve this dessert drizzled with honey. Use a runny honey, never crystallized.
  • Apples are a valuable, wholesome fruit, especially rich in iron and fiber. The carbs in every variety make them a natural remedy for sluggish digestion and a great way to help clean out the system. They're also low in calories, which helps if you're watching your weight. These fried apples are great as a filling for crêpes or pies, or simply served as a dessert with tea or coffee. They're especially lovely topped with whipped cream or a scoop of ice cream.
