Eggless Fried Bread

Wonderful homemade eggless fried bread in just minutes! This is a great way to use up a day-old loaf that nobody's likely to eat as-is. You can turn that kind of bread into little croutons by frying cubes in a skillet or toasting them in the oven — with or without spices, with or without butter. And a day-old loaf is also perfect for making all sorts of fried bread.

Cooking method

Cooking time: 25 min
  1. Step 1:

    Step 1

Gather everything you'll need for eggless fried bread: a loaf (day-old and on the firmer side is best), fresh milk, granulated sugar, a little vanilla sugar, and real butter for frying. The amounts are just a guideline — you may need a few more slices depending on how dry the bread is and how big you cut the pieces.

  2. Step 2:

    Step 2

Pour the milk into a bowl wide enough to dip the bread slices in comfortably. Add the granulated sugar and vanilla sugar and stir with a tablespoon until the sugar fully dissolves.

  3. Step 3:

    Step 3

Gently dip the bread slices in the sweet milk on both sides, then set them on a plate to let the excess drain off.

  4. Step 4:

    Step 4

Melt some of the butter in a skillet and add the milk-soaked slices to the hot butter.

  5. Step 5:

    Step 5

Fry the slices over medium heat until golden brown on both sides.

  6. Step 6:

    Step 6

Transfer the hot fried bread to a clean plate, garnish however you like, and serve right away while it's fresh and warm! Freshly made, it's far tastier and more inviting. Enjoy!

  • To serve, top the fried bread with fresh or canned berries and fruit, or fragrant herbs like mint, lemon balm, or fresh thyme. It's also great with jam or preserves, sweetened condensed milk, or honey. Instead of vanilla sugar, you can add a knife-tip of ground cinnamon to the milk for a lovely cinnamon note. For a finishing touch, dust the slices with powdered sugar or drizzle them with chocolate or berry topping.
