Turkey Thigh Fillet in the Slow Cooker
The most tender meat with vegetables — like a little holiday any day of the week! Turkey thigh fillet in the slow cooker is a perfect way to shake up the family menu. The poultry soaks up all the vegetable flavors, and you can serve it on its own with a salad or alongside buckwheat, potatoes, or rice.
Cooking method
-
Step 1:
How do you stew a turkey thigh in a slow cooker? Get all your ingredients ready. Use whatever vegetables you like — I went with the most common ones, the kind you'll find in just about any fridge. Rinse the turkey thigh under running water and pat it dry with paper towels to remove any remaining moisture.
-
Step 2:
Remove the skin from the thigh and cut out the bone (save the bone for making broth later). Cut the thigh fillet into medium-sized pieces.
-
Step 3:
Pour the vegetable oil into the slow cooker pot and set it to the "Fry" mode. Add the pieces of meat and let them brown for a while.
-
Step 4:
Stir the turkey now and then so nothing burns. Cook for about 10–15 minutes, until golden.
-
Step 5:
Peel the onion, carrots, and garlic — use as much garlic as you like. Wash all the vegetables in cold water. Halve the bell peppers and remove the seeds and cores. You can peel the tomatoes if you prefer.
-
Step 6:
Cut the tomatoes, onion, carrots, garlic, and pepper into large pieces. If you cut them too small, they'll cook down to mush. I used cherry tomatoes instead of regular ones.
-
Step 7:
Add the onion, carrots, and garlic to the meat and fry, stirring, for about 5 more minutes.
-
Step 8:
Add the tomatoes and pepper to the pot. Season with salt to taste and sprinkle in your favorite dry spices — I used ground paprika and Italian herbs. Stir everything and switch the slow cooker to the "Stew" mode.
-
Step 9:
Cook until everything is done. The cooking time will set automatically, depending on your slow cooker's model and power; mine took about 1 hour. Check on the turkey 10–15 minutes in to make sure it isn't scorching. If needed, add a little boiling water (1/4 to 1/2 cup). If you're using juicy tomatoes, you usually won't need any extra water.
-
Step 10:
Sprinkle the finished meat with finely chopped fresh herbs, add pepper if you like, and serve. Delicious on its own.
-
Step 11:
It also pairs perfectly with cooked pasta or grains.
- Enjoy!
- Wash the meat and be sure to pat it dry with a paper towel — otherwise the extra moisture keeps it from browning and it just steams instead.
- An easy way to peel tomatoes: wash them, score a shallow criss-cross in the skin with a sharp knife, and drop them into boiling water for 1–2 minutes. Lift them out, cool slightly, and slip off the skins.
- You can swap the turkey for chicken or any other meat you like — just keep in mind that the cooking time and calorie count will change.
