Slow Cooker Potatoes with Canned Stewed Meat

A tasty, hearty dish of potatoes and canned stewed meat. Serve it with rye or white bread, or with flatbread. Pickles go nicely with it too, or you can make a fresh vegetable salad, especially in peak season. If you need to transfer the potatoes out of the slow cooker, wait until they've cooled completely — otherwise they can turn sour. And don't forget to sprinkle the dish with fresh dill, parsley, or green onion when serving.

Cooking method

Cooking time: 30 min
  1. Step 1:

    Step 1

How do you make slow cooker potatoes with canned stewed meat? Peel the potatoes, wash them, and cut them into medium pieces. Then wash them well again under running water to rinse off the released starch — otherwise the potatoes will stay firm. The dish's flavor will depend on the variety of potato.

  2. Step 2:

    Step 2

Peel the onions and cut them into half- or quarter-rings, depending on their size. You can use more than the two onions the recipe calls for, especially if they're small.

  3. Step 3:

    Step 3

Take the stewed meat out of the can, transfer it to a bowl, and mash it with a fork. Use a canned meat you trust — good quality, and ideally homemade.

  4. Step 4:

    Step 4

Layer the potatoes into the slow cooker bowl first — no need to grease the bottom.

  5. Step 5:

    Step 5

    Scatter the onion on top.

  6. Step 6:

    Step 6

Then add the stewed meat — I use the whole can. Note that I don't add water, since my canned meat is juicy on its own. If yours is a bit dry, add a splash of water; and if it has very little fat, add some fat too, preferably pork.

  7. Step 7:

    Step 7

Add the salt and bay leaf — I used about 1 heaping teaspoon of crushed bay leaf. Stir everything well with a large wooden spoon or spatula so you don't scratch the slow cooker's nonstick coating. Set the slow cooker to the "Stew" mode for 25 minutes. Mine is 700 W, and its "Stew" mode defaults to 1 hour — I shortened the time.

  8. Step 8:

    Step 8

25 minutes was enough for my potatoes to cook through without falling apart. You can always adjust the time based on how fast the potatoes cook, which depends on the variety and your slow cooker's power. The key is to check for doneness at the right moment. You can stir the potatoes once or twice during cooking, but no more, or they'll turn to mush.

  • Delicious potatoes in no time — just 30 minutes and lunch is on the table. All you have to do is prep the ingredients; the slow cooker does the rest.
  • Keep in mind that the cooking times and settings in the recipe are approximate. Every slow cooker works a bit differently, and even identical models from the same maker can behave uniquely. Before trying a new dish in your slow cooker, read its manual carefully, then practice with dishes you already know before moving on to new ones, tuning the settings and times to your own machine.
  • If you use a premade spice blend, read the label first. These blends often already contain salt, so account for it or you risk over-salting the dish.
