Savory Waffle Cake with Egg and Mackerel

A savory salad "cake" to dress up your table and satisfy your appetite! Pretty and delicious. You can swap the filling to suit your own taste—for example, use boiled chicken instead of canned fish, add beets to the carrot, and so on.

  • Prep all the ingredients for layering the cake. Hard-boil the eggs and let them cool. Peel and grate the carrot (you can boil it ahead of time or use it raw). Chop the walnut pieces and add them to the carrot, season with salt, stir in part of the mayonnaise (about half), and mix. Place a waffle sheet on the platter you'll serve the cake on—choose a platter slightly larger than the sheet so the filling doesn't sink in. Pipe a lattice of mayonnaise and spread on the canned fish, mashed with a fork beforehand (I like mackerel). That's the first layer. Cover it with the next waffle sheet. For the second layer, spread on the carrot-and-walnut mixture. The third layer, like the first, is spread with mayonnaise; grate the eggs and lay them evenly over the sheet. Rinse and finely chop the herbs, scatter them over the eggs, and add a little salt. The fourth and final layer is a waffle sheet with mayonnaise and grated cheese—the cheese also works as the cake's decoration. You can scatter a little more herbs on top. Your savory waffle cake with canned fish is ready. It's best not to let it sit too long, so the waffles don't get soggy.
  • Enjoy!
