Cooking method
-
Step 1:
How do you make a delicious homemade salad with ham, tomatoes, croutons, and beans? Very simply. First, gather all the ingredients you'll need. You can swap out and add to the listed ingredients to your taste - for example, add sweet bell pepper, napa cabbage, and so on. You can use wheat or rye croutons, store-bought ones with various flavorings, or make them yourself. Mine are sour-cream-flavored rye croutons.
-
Step 2:
Drain the liquid from the canned corn and beans. It's better to rinse and dry the beans as well.
-
Step 3:
Cut the tomatoes into slices. Choose firm tomatoes. Soft ones don't hold their shape well; as you cut and mix them, they fall apart into a shapeless mush and ruin the look of the dish. If the tomatoes are very watery, it's better to remove the seedy center and leave the flesh, so the salad doesn't get too wet.
-
Step 4:
Cut the ham into strips. Use whatever ham you like the taste of. You can replace the ham with smoked pork neck, gammon, or pork loin.
-
Step 5:
Cut the cucumbers into strips as well. If the skin isn't tough, damaged, or bitter, you don't need to peel it off.
-
Step 6:
In a bowl, combine the ham, cucumbers, tomatoes, canned beans, and corn.
-
Step 7:
Dress the salad with mayonnaise and add the croutons. If you don't plan to serve the salad right away or within the next 10-15 minutes, it's better not to add the croutons and mayonnaise. The croutons will quickly get soggy and turn into a bread mush. This happens especially fast with wheat croutons.
-
Step 8:
Mix everything thoroughly and serve right away. If you like, you can sprinkle the salad with chopped parsley and green onion. Enjoy!
- Since everyone's tolerance for salt, sweetness, bitterness, heat, acidity, and spice is different, always add spices and seasonings to your own taste! If you're using a seasoning for the first time, keep in mind that some are especially easy to overdo (chili pepper, for example).
- How do you buy canned corn the right way? Be sure to check the expiration date on the can. If the container is glass, inspect the kernels closely. They should be the same size and color, whole and unblemished. The ingredients shouldn't include dyes, preservatives, or flavor enhancers.
- It's better to make the mayonnaise yourself - it's tastier and better for you. See some interesting homemade mayonnaise recipes here. You can also use sour cream or plain yogurt as a dressing instead of mayonnaise. Use them on their own or mix them with mayonnaise in any ratio you like - this will cut the dish's calories.
