  • Of all the canned fish, cod liver has been my favorite for many years. But its high price and high fat content mean I can't buy it as often as I'd like. So for me, cod liver appetizers are more of a holiday treat than an everyday dish. Like red caviar.
  • How do you hard-boil eggs? To keep the eggs from cracking, put them in cold water and set them over low heat. Boil the eggs for 9 minutes after the water comes to a boil, then cover them with cold water and cool them. The sharp temperature change makes the shells peel off more easily.
  • It's better to make the mayonnaise yourself - it'll be tastier and better for you. See some interesting homemade mayonnaise recipes here. You can also use sour cream or plain yogurt as the dressing - on their own or mixed with mayonnaise in any ratio you like, which lowers the calorie count.
