Cooking method
-
Step 1:
To make chicken braised with onions, grab chicken drumsticks, onion, salt, oil, and ground pepper.
-
Step 2:
Cut the drumsticks in half to make them easier to handle.
-
Step 3:
Brown the chicken in the hot oil.
-
Step 4:
Flip the pieces and brown the other side.
-
Step 5:
Peel and coarsely chop the onion.
-
Step 6:
Add the onion to the chicken, cook briefly, then season with salt and pepper, cover, and braise over low heat for about 35–45 minutes. Serve the finished chicken hot in its onion sauce, with any side dish, or simply on its own with the sauce and some fresh herbs.
- Chicken braised with onions is a fragrant, mild, and light dish. It works for any table — kid-friendly and diet-friendly alike (just leave out the pepper for the latter).
- All oils are only good up to a certain temperature — their smoke point, where the oil starts to burn and forms harmful compounds, including carcinogens. For how to gauge frying temperature and pick the best oil for the job (and which to avoid), see the guide.
- Note that how well you thaw the ingredients has a lot to do with the quality and flavor of the finished dish. For how to avoid mistakes and pick the best method, see the guide on thawing.
- You can swap the chicken for turkey or any other meat you prefer — just keep in mind that the cooking time and calorie count will change.
