Braised Cabbage with Pork in a Slow Cooker
Made from simple ingredients, this dish is easy, tasty, and perfect for any day of the week! Cabbage braised with meat in a slow cooker deserves a spot in your weeknight rotation. It's not only delicious but also wholesome, and it works great for lunch or dinner.
Cooking method
-
Step 1:
How do you make braised cabbage with meat in a slow cooker? Start by gathering your ingredients. You can use any meat you like — beef, chicken, turkey, or pork, as I did here.
-
Step 2:
Cut the meat into small pieces. Set your slow cooker to the "sauté" (frying) mode and let it heat up. Add a little vegetable oil, then add the meat. Brown it for a few minutes until it takes on a golden crust.
-
Step 3:
Peel the onion and carrot and rinse them clean. Finely chop the onion and grate the carrot on the coarse side of a box grater.
-
Step 4:
Add the chopped vegetables to the meat, stir, and sauté everything together for another 3 to 5 minutes.
-
Step 5:
Meanwhile, thinly shred the cabbage.
-
Step 6:
Add the cabbage to the slow cooker. In a separate glass, stir the tomato paste into a splash of water, then pour it over the cabbage. Season with a little salt and spices to taste. Stir everything together, cover, and set to the "stew/braise" mode for 1 hour. Stir the cabbage once or twice as it cooks.
-
Step 7:
After an hour, the slow cooker will beep to let you know the dish is ready. Serve the cabbage and meat hot. Enjoy!
- Besides pork, you can use any other meat in this dish. Just keep in mind that the cooking time, flavor, and calorie count will change. Beef, for example, takes longer than pork, while chicken breast or turkey cooks faster.
- Remember that the cooking time and settings here are approximate. Every slow cooker behaves a little differently, and even identical models from the same manufacturer can vary. Before trying a new recipe, read your machine's manual, then practice with dishes you already know before moving on to new ones, adjusting the setting and timing to suit your own appliance.
- To keep your eyes from watering when you cut onions, rinse both the onion and the knife in cold water first. And to keep your cutting board from holding onto that oniony smell, rub it with a cut lemon before slicing.
