Cooking method

  1. Step 1:

    Step 1

How do you make bulgur with meat in a slow cooker? Start by gathering your ingredients. Any kind of meat works here — I'm using pork. Go with a boneless cut; a little fat is fine. Cut the meat into small pieces.

  2. Step 2:

    Step 2

Set the slow cooker to its "Sauté" mode. Pour a little vegetable oil into the pot, add the cubed meat to the hot pot, and cook for a few minutes until it starts to brown.

  3. Step 3:

    Step 3

Meanwhile, prep the vegetables. Peel the onion and carrot and rinse them clean. Cut the onion into half-moons and the carrot into cubes, sticks, or rounds.

  4. Step 4:

    Step 4

Add the chopped vegetables to the pot with the meat. Stir and cook everything together for another 2–3 minutes, until fragrant.

  5. Step 5:

    Step 5

Pour in 1 cup of hot water. Switch to the "Bake" mode for 20 minutes, close the lid, and let the meat braise.

  6. Step 6:

    Step 6

By now the meat will be much more tender. Stir in the cup of bulgur and pour in 2 more cups of hot water. Season with salt and spices to taste, and add the peeled garlic cloves. Switch the slow cooker to the "Grains" mode for 25 minutes and cook with the lid closed.

  7. Step 7:

    Step 7

When the timer beeps, the dish is ready. The bulgur will be soft and fluffy. Spoon the bulgur and meat onto plates and serve hot. Enjoy!

  • Besides pork, you can use just about any meat here. Keep in mind that the cooking time, flavor, and calorie count will change — beef takes longer than pork, while chicken breast or turkey cooks faster.
  • Bulgur is easy to work with and endlessly versatile, so don't be afraid to experiment with it.
  • Everyone's palate for salt, sweetness, heat, and tang is different, so always season to your own taste. When you're trying a spice for the first time, go easy — some, like chili pepper, are very easy to overdo.
