The Laziest Cabbage Rolls
Super simple and super tasty! You've got to give it a try. Everybody loves cabbage rolls, but not everybody loves making them—and honestly, they are a fussy, time-consuming project. Still, sometimes you just crave cabbage rolls! So here's my alternative take on the dish: a recipe for the LAZIEST cabbage rolls! They earn the name because you don't have to roll a single one. It couldn't be easier—boil, sauté, mix, boil again, and you're done!
Cooking method
-
Step 1:
Gather your ingredients.
-
Step 2:
Peel the onions and cut them into small dice. Peel the carrot as well and grate it on the large holes of a box grater.
-
Step 3:
Shred the cabbage, not too fine, and put it in a large pot (mine holds 5 quarts). Cover the cabbage with water. Cook for 1 hour, adding salt only in the last 10 minutes.
NOTE: Keep in mind that rice and ground meat go into the pot along with the cabbage, so the cabbage shouldn't fill it all the way. Add just enough water so that it comes level with the cabbage when you press it down to the bottom. In the photo you can't even see the water.
-
Step 4:
Rinse the rice and boil it until almost done.
-
Step 5:
Sauté the carrot and onions in vegetable oil until golden, add the ground meat, stir, cover, and cook for 10–15 minutes, stirring now and then. Season with salt and pepper. Then stir in the tomato sauce, cover, and cook for another 10 minutes.
-
Step 6:
Add the rice to the cabbage and stir. Then add the meat mixture, stir again, cover, and cook for 10 minutes. Add the bay leaf, salt if needed, and cook for another 10 minutes.
-
Step 7:
Once it's done, let the cabbage rolls "rest" under the lid for 10 minutes, then stir and dig in!
- These amounts make a BIG batch of lazy cabbage rolls—enough to fill a 5-quart pot.
