Cooking method

  1. Step 1:

    Step 1

How do you bake rice with meat in the oven? Gather your ingredients. You can use any meat you like: pork, beef, lamb, or something else — I'm using pork. Rinse the meat under running water and pat it dry with paper towels. Then cut it into small, roughly equal pieces.

  2. Step 2:

    Step 2

Pour a little vegetable oil into a hot skillet and fry the meat, stirring now and then, for about 3–5 minutes.

  3. Step 3:

    Step 3

Peel and rinse the onion and carrot, and pat them dry. Finely chop the onion and grate the carrot on a medium grater. Add the chopped onion and carrot to the meat in the skillet and fry everything together for about 5 more minutes.

  4. Step 4:

    Step 4

Transfer the meat and vegetables to a prepared baking dish.

  5. Step 5:

    Step 5

Rinse the long-grain rice several times in cold water until the water runs clear, then drain it completely.

  6. Step 6:

    Step 6

Spread the rinsed rice evenly over the meat in the dish. Pour in enough hot water to cover the rice by about half an inch (1 cm). Season with a little salt and spices to taste, and sprinkle with chopped fresh herbs. Put the dish in an oven preheated to 375°F (190°C) for about 40 minutes. Adjust the exact time and temperature to your own oven.

  7. Step 7:

    Step 7

Take the finished dish out of the oven, plate it, and serve. Round it out with a light vegetable salad or fresh veggies, and make a sauce on the side if you like. Enjoy!

  • Dishes cooked in the oven always come out heartier and more full-flavored, and this one is no exception. That's because heat spreads more evenly in the oven than on the stovetop. When you bake rice with meat this way, you can add mushrooms or vegetables like tomatoes, zucchini, or bell peppers. You can even work in some cream — just dilute the water with an equal part of cream and pour it over the rice before it goes in the oven. Either way, you'll end up with a tasty, filling dish to serve the whole family for lunch or dinner.
  • Use an oil with a high smoke point for frying! Every oil is good only up to a certain temperature — its smoke point — beyond which it starts to burn and forms harmful compounds. Unrefined oils, with few exceptions, have a low smoke point: they contain lots of unfiltered particles that scorch quickly. Refined oils hold up better to heat and have a higher smoke point. If you're cooking in the oven, in a skillet, or on the grill, make sure to use a high-smoke-point oil — refined sunflower, olive, and grapeseed oils are among the most common.
  • Keep in mind that every oven is different. The temperature and cooking time may vary from what's given in the recipe, so watch your dish as it bakes.
