Edible Lace Tuiles — Budget All-Purpose Garnish
Use these to decorate cakes, pastries, salads, and appetizers. To eat a plate of dumplings with sour cream at the kitchen counter, or a couple of hot dogs, you don't need a garnish. But when it comes to plating up something festive that you want to wow your guests with, it makes all the difference. It's not enough to be a good cook and make something tasty—you have to know how to present a dish so it turns into a showstopper. That's where garnishes and decoration come in, and it's better when they're edible. I want to show you one of the most budget-friendly and versatile garnishes there is.
Cooking method
-
Step 1:
To make the batter, simply stir all the ingredients together: add the oil, flour, water, and food coloring.
-
Step 2:
Get a skillet very hot—one with high sides works best. Stir the batter once more and carefully pour it into the pan.
-
Step 3:
The oil will sizzle and spatter. Don't cover the pan—the water needs to evaporate.
-
Step 4:
Once the sizzling stops completely, the lace tuile is done.
-
Step 5:
Carefully lift it out and transfer it to a paper-towel-lined plate.
-
Step 6:
Add this garnish right before serving, or it will go soft.
