Chicken Hearts with Potatoes in the Slow Cooker

A great budget-friendly alternative to a classic pot roast. It turns out somewhere between a roast and potatoes with mushrooms — and in the slow cooker it comes together faster than on the stovetop.

  • Chicken hearts cooked with potatoes in a slow cooker make a really tasty dish. Start by prepping everything: rinse the chicken hearts well, trim the fat at the base, and cut each heart in half lengthwise. Peel and wash the potatoes, onion, and carrots. Dice the onion small, grate the carrots on the coarse side of a box grater, and cut the potatoes into large chunks. Set the slow cooker to the frying mode with a 15-minute timer. Pour the vegetable oil into the pot, heat it for a minute, and add the onion and carrots. Fry, stirring, for 5 minutes, then add the salt and spices. After another 5 minutes, add the chicken hearts and keep frying everything together for 5 minutes more. Sprinkle in the flour, stir, and after 2–3 minutes stir in the sour cream. Just before the frying cycle ends, pour the water over the hearts and vegetables and mix well. Now add the potatoes to the pot along with a bay leaf, stir, and close the lid. Make sure the steam valve is closed. Switch the slow cooker to the stew mode, set the timer to 15 minutes again, and wait for the done signal. As soon as it beeps, turn it off, lift the valve to release the steam, and then open the lid. The chicken hearts with potatoes are ready.
