Rolled-oat porridge in a slow cooker with milk
A tasty, wholesome rolled-oat porridge from the slow cooker. Start your day with a delicious bowl of oatmeal and it'll keep you going for hours. And so you don't have to fuss over it in the morning, make it in a slow cooker — no standing at the stove making sure it doesn't scorch or boil over.
Cooking method
-
Step 1:
How do you make rolled-oat porridge in a slow cooker with milk? Gather the ingredients. I prefer regular thick rolled oats, since I find them more wholesome than instant oatmeal, but use whatever you like.
-
Step 2:
Grease the bottom and sides of the slow cooker pot well with half of the butter. You can use plain vegetable oil instead if you prefer.
-
Step 3:
Add the rolled oats to the pot.
-
Step 4:
Add the sugar and salt to the oats. You can use white, brown, or cane sugar — the latter gives the porridge a subtle caramel note. It's better to sweeten to taste afterward, once the porridge is cooked.
-
Step 5:
Pour the milk in with the oats and stir. Set the pot in the slow cooker and run it on the "Milk Porridge" setting for 35 minutes.
-
Step 6:
Different slow cookers may label their settings differently, so check your model and its manual. Mine has two cooking modes — "Oatmeal" and "Milk Porridge." The "Oatmeal" mode cooks for 20 minutes and gives a fairly thin porridge, while "Milk Porridge" runs 35 minutes and comes out thick, the way I like it.
-
Step 7:
After the beep, turn off the keep-warm but leave it to sit for another 5–7 minutes so the porridge rests. The cooking time depends on your slow cooker's power, so go by your own machine.
-
Step 8:
Taste the porridge, spoon it into bowls, and serve with a pat of butter. If you like, add dried fruit, raisins, nuts, or chocolate, or drizzle it with honey.
-
Step 9:
Enjoy!
- Rolled-oat porridge is the best breakfast for kids and adults alike. It's very good for you — high in fiber, easy on the stomach, energizing, and helps clear out toxins. It's good for the heart and lifts your mood. So start your day right.
- Important! For oat dishes that always come out delicious, plus all the tips on choosing and cooking them, see the article on oats and rolled oats.
- Keep in mind that the cooking time and setting in the recipe are approximate. All slow cookers work differently, and even identical models from the same maker can have their quirks. Before making a new dish in your slow cooker, read its manual carefully, then practice with dishes you already know before trying new ones, adjusting the setting and time to your own machine.
- Instead of sugar, you can use a sweetener that holds up to heat.
