Cranberry Kissel
A very tasty, nourishing, and wholesome drink! Kissel is a great breakfast drink for the whole family. You can find instant kissel mixes in stores these days — just stir in hot water — but those mixes contain dyes and preservatives. A homemade drink from fresh berries is far better for you.
Cooking method
-
Step 1:
Gather the ingredients from the list. Cranberries are a very healthful berry, packed with beneficial nutrients and trace minerals. They're used to make preserves, jam, compote, and even kissel. You can use fresh or frozen berries.
-
Step 2:
To preserve as many vitamins as possible while thawing frozen berries, scald them with hot water and move straight on to crushing them.
-
Step 3:
Then mash them into a purée with a masher or blend them with an immersion blender.
-
Step 4:
Cover the berry purée with hot water and set it over the heat. Bring the mixture to a boil and add the sugar. Stir and simmer the cranberries for about 5 minutes.
-
Step 5:
In a glass of warm boiled water, dissolve the starch.
-
Step 6:
Pour the starch mixture into the pot with the main mixture and heat it, stirring constantly with a spoon. Don't let it come to a boil. Turn off the heat. The kissel is ready. You can serve this drink with buns, cookies, or other baked goods. Enjoy!
- Kissel is a traditional Russian dish that dates back to the days of Kievan Rus. It's a gelatinous mixture made from fruit compote and starch. It's easy to make, with great texture and flavor. Made on a base of cranberry compote, it's especially good for you. Cranberries are rich in B vitamins and contain malic, benzoic, quinic, ursolic, chlorogenic, and oleic acids. Cranberries boost the immune system, have a protective, fortifying effect, help normalize cholesterol, and help prevent prostatitis. This berry is good for women too. It helps with weight control, prevents swelling, reduces under-eye bags, and helps prevent urinary-tract issues, colds, and headaches. The berries are also good for women over 50 — they ease hot flashes during menopause. Cranberries help normalize blood pressure, support hemoglobin levels, and ease migraine attacks.
