Jam in a Slow Cooker
Fast, cheap, simple, and very tasty! Jam in a slow cooker is a recipe that's really handy for anyone without a stove to put up something sweet for winter — at a cottage, for example. This jam has a particularly pleasant flavor, so be sure to give it a try!
Cooking method
-
Step 1:
How do you make jam in a slow cooker? Gather the ingredients. For winter preserves, it's best to use seasonal, garden apples that are good and ripe — that's when the jam comes out the most fragrant and delicious. You can use more or less sugar, depending on your preference. If your apples are a tart variety, leave out the citric acid.
-
Step 2:
Pick over the apples, removing any spoiled fruit — it can cause fermentation. Wash them well and dry them. Peel the apples. To take the peel off in a thin layer, I recommend using a vegetable peeler.
-
Step 3:
Cut each apple into quarters. Cut out the core and the stem ends.
-
Step 4:
Put the cut apple pieces in a bowl and cover them with the sugar.
-
Step 5:
Add the citric acid. Mix well.
-
Step 6:
Put the combined mixture in the slow cooker and set it to the "Bake" mode for 1 hour (or whatever mode you usually use to bake in your slow cooker — that depends on your model). After the end-of-cooking signal, switch to the "Stew" mode (or another suitable one), also for 1 hour.
-
Step 7:
When the time is up, open the lid and stir the jam. Spoon it into clean, prepared jars while it's still hot. Seal them with clean lids.
-
Step 8:
Store the finished jam in a cool, dry place. Enjoy!

- Instead of sugar, you can use a sweetener that holds up to heat.
- Keep in mind that the cooking time and mode given in the recipe are approximate. All slow cookers work differently, and even identical models from the same maker can have their quirks. Before making a dish that's new to you in a slow cooker, read its manual carefully, then practice by first cooking dishes you know well and later new ones, dialing in the mode and time for your own machine.
