Mojito is a drink with light rum and mint. There are two well-known types of mojito, alcoholic and non-alcoholic.

The story of mojito is very interesting.

Many agree that the predecessor of this cocktail is the Drak drink from the 16th century. It is prescribed to the brave English pirates F.Drake. It was then that mint leaves and lime began to be thrown into pirate rum. The reasons for this were practical – mint and "green lemon" were the prevention of diseases and somewhat changed the unpleasant taste of this rum. There was a "Drak", possibly in Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, wherever Francis Drake was engaged in piracy. But it was in Cuba that the pirate drink became super popular.

1862 was an epoch-making year for mojito. Almost 300 years have passed since the creation of the cocktail "Drak". In Cuba, Don Facundo Bacardi Masso founded the production of Bacardi rum, which will be the basis of many alcoholic beverages, including Mojito. Rum, one of the most beloved drinks of sailors, has become an essential attribute of social life. In 1930, according to one version of the appearance of Mojito, it says: at a reception at the center of Havana's social life, the Seville Hotel, the bartender made a new version of julep (it's bourbon with mint and sugar). So he replaced bourbon with Bacardi. The new cocktail was called Mojito – from mojado (wet). Some sources even mention a specific date – May 25. It is this date that is celebrated as the birthday of the famous cocktail.

A year later, the Mojito recipe appeared in the directory of bartenders in Havana.

In 1933, a branch of the famous Sloppy Joe's Bar opened in Havana. A friend of the owner of this institution, Joe Russell, was Ernest Hemingway, who fell in love with Mojito. As a result, it became the most famous drink of the institution.

10 years later, Angel Martinez opened his own restaurant in Havana. In the bar of this institution, the legendary Mojito was mixed, which attracted the highest society from all over the country. It was here, but later, that the stars met with this cocktail of the rich and famous.

In the mid-40s, Cuban bartenders spread the drink among the upper class, it appeared on the menu of bars in the capitals of the world. Later, thanks to millions of American travelers, Mojito penetrated into Europe.

Just a decade ago, the fashion for cocktails with fresh fruit returned to London. This again elevated Mojito to the top of popularity. In the famous club of the British capital "Bar 50's", the apple mojito became a hit overnight. A little later, its varieties with strawberries, grapes, blackberries, pomegranate took a leading place in the menu of the most famous restaurants and clubs all over the planet.

Today this drink is at the peak of popularity. They order both alcoholic and non-alcoholic Mojitos, in which rum is excluded.
