Cooking method
- These little treats sit somewhere between a cookie and a candy, though I lean toward candy since there's no flour involved. Combine the condensed milk, butter, egg yolk, and cocoa powder in a saucepan and mix well, almost whisking it with a spoon. Set the pan over low heat and cook for about 12 minutes, stirring constantly so it doesn't scorch. Keep cooking until the mixture thickens and starts pulling away from the bottom of the pan, like a thick pudding. Spread it onto a greased surface — a baking sheet or plate, whatever you have on hand — and let it cool completely. Now roll it into small, perfectly round balls, using about 1 teaspoon of the mixture per ball. Grease your hands with a little butter to make this easier; if the mixture starts sticking, rinse your hands in cold water and re-grease them. Fair warning — this part gets messy. Put chocolate sprinkles or shavings in a bowl (if you're using a chocolate bar, chill it until firm and grate it on a fine grater). Roll each ball in the chocolate until fully coated, then set it on a plate. If any truffles look greasy, blot them on a paper towel.
