Treat your family to a gorgeous berry dessert! A friend once served me a wonderful cherry dessert, and I decided then and there to make it myself. The flavor of cherries simmered in red wine is like nothing else—give it a try!

- Sort through the cherries, discarding any bad ones, then remove the stems and rinse them.
- Put the cherries in a saucepan and add the sugar.
- In a small bowl, stir the cornstarch with a little wine (just about 1 tablespoon) until smooth.
- Pour the rest of the wine into the pan with the cherries and set it over the heat.
- Bring to a boil, then lower the heat to a minimum and cook for 12 minutes, stirring constantly.
- Stir in the cornstarch-and-wine slurry and boil for another minute to thicken the juice slightly.
- Turn off the heat, stir in the almond extract, and mix.
- These cherries keep in the fridge for 6–7 days, or up to 6 months in the freezer.
