Classic Shepherd's Pie in a Slow Cooker

Your favorite dish doesn't have to be made in the oven — give this a try! A classic meat-and-potato casserole comes out just as tasty in a slow cooker as in the oven. The one drawback (which some will see as a plus) is that you won't get that appetizing golden crust. Serve the casserole hot, with your favorite sauce, fresh herbs, or sliced vegetables — fresh or roasted.

    1. Wash the potatoes well and peel them. Cut the potatoes into a few pieces, put them in a medium pot, and cover with water so they're fully submerged. Add a little salt. Boil the potatoes until soft, then drain off the water, leaving just a bit in the pot. 2. Add the butter to the potatoes and pour in the warm (not hot) cream. Mash everything with a potato masher. Add the egg whites and quickly stir them in. 3. Heat a skillet over medium heat and add the vegetable oil. Peel the onion and cut it into small cubes. Add the onion to the hot oil and fry until lightly golden, stirring constantly. 4. Add the ground beef to the onion and cook it until browned too. Season with salt and ground black pepper as it cooks — it's more fragrant if you grind the peppercorns fresh in a mill. 5. Grease the slow cooker bowl with a bit of butter, then build the layers. Spread a third of the mashed potatoes on the bottom and smooth it out. Next, a layer of beef — use half of it. Then potatoes again — the second third, smoothed out. Add the remaining beef, spreading it evenly over the potato layer. Top with the last of the mashed potatoes and smooth it. 6. Set the bowl back in the slow cooker and close the lid. Select the "Bake" setting for half an hour. When the time's up, release the steam and leave the casserole inside for another 10–15 minutes. Then lift it out, cut it into portions, and serve. Enjoy!
