Egg-in-a-Hole (Fried Egg in Bread)
Egg fried right in the bread — simple, tasty, and pretty! Egg-in-a-hole is an original but very easy dish. A great idea for a family breakfast: it looks nice, tastes great, and comes together fast!
Cooking method
-
Step 1:
How do you fry an egg in bread? Gather your ingredients. Use good eggs — farm eggs, or at least large ones with a bright yolk, will make your dish look much prettier. Square sandwich bread is ideal, but a regular white loaf works too. If you're slicing it yourself, aim for about 1/2 inch (1 cm) thick — not too thick.
-
Step 2:
Slice the bread, or use pre-sliced pieces. A tip: don't use fresh, soft bread here — it'll crumble when you cut it. Cut a circle out of the center of each slice. You can use a small glass or just cut it with a knife.
-
Step 3:
Heat vegetable oil in the skillet you'll be cooking in. It doesn't matter whether it's corn or sunflower oil, but if you're frying, always use refined oil — otherwise it will scorch in the pan. Lay in the slices of bread.
-
Step 4:
Wash the eggs well — this is a must, since the shell carries a lot of bacteria. Scrub them gently with hot water using a food-safe wash and a special brush. Carefully crack an egg into each cut-out hole, keeping the yolk intact. A note: smaller eggs are best here, since there isn't much room in the bread — a large egg will overflow the white.
-
Step 5:
Salt the eggs lightly. You can also add pepper to taste, or your favorite herbs and seasonings: ground paprika, herbes de Provence, garlic powder. Or you might scatter chopped fresh herbs over the dish — dill, parsley, and green onion all work nicely.
-
Step 6:
Cook over low heat until the yolk reaches the firmness you want, ideally covered with a lid. About 7–10 minutes. Enjoy!
