Baked Pork Chops with Cheese
Juicy pork chops with a golden, cheesy crust! Pork chops baked in the oven with cheese are about the easiest chop you can make, even if you're just starting out in the kitchen. The meat comes out tender and melt-in-your-mouth every time, and lunch or dinner built around these chops is guaranteed to be delicious and filling.
Cooking method
-
Step 1:
How do you make baked pork chops with cheese? Gather your ingredients. Go for a boneless piece of pork with no gristle. The onion should be medium, but this is up to you — if you love onions, use more. I use a semi-hard cheese with about 50% fat; it melts beautifully in the oven into an appetizing crust. Mayonnaise keeps everything juicy. Salt and pepper to taste. Have an oven-safe baking dish ready.
-
Step 2:
Unwrap the cheese and trim off the rind if there is one. Grate it on the coarse side of a box grater. I go with a semi-hard cheese, but use whatever you like or have on hand.
-
Step 3:
Peel the onions, rinse them, and slice into half-moons or rings.
-
Step 4:
Fresh pork is best here. If the meat is frozen, thaw it ahead of time at room temperature. Then rinse it and pat dry with a paper towel. Cut the pork into serving-size pieces about 1/2 to 3/4 inch (1.5–2 cm) thick. Pound each piece on both sides with a meat mallet without tearing them apart. Arrange the prepared chops in a baking dish that's been greased with vegetable oil or lined with parchment paper.
-
Step 5:
Season each piece with salt and pepper, then brush evenly with mayonnaise. The mayo keeps the meat juicy and stops the onion and cheese from drying out.
-
Step 6:
Top each chop with the sliced onion half-moons.
-
Step 7:
Sprinkle the grated cheese evenly over each piece. Place the dish in an oven preheated to 350°F (180°C) and bake for 20–25 minutes, or until golden brown.
-
Step 8:
Serve the baked cheesy pork chops hot. This is a versatile dish — pair it with potatoes, pasta, rice, or any vegetables you like. A hearty, delicious dinner for the whole family is ready.
- Meat chops are a popular go-to. Not only is a chop a delicious meal on its own, you can also dress the meat up with all kinds of toppings: cheese, mushrooms, tomatoes, and so on. And you can use any meat — pork, chicken, or beef all make wonderfully fragrant, juicy portions. In my case, it's pork.
- Keep in mind that every oven is different, so the temperature and cooking time may vary from what's listed here. For any baked dish to come out great, it helps to know your own oven's quirks.
- Mayonnaise is better made from scratch — it'll taste better and be healthier. You'll find plenty of homemade mayo recipes to try. You can also use sour cream or plain yogurt in place of mayonnaise, either on their own or mixed with mayo in any ratio you like — that'll cut down the calories.
- Remember that properly thawing your ingredients has a lot to do with the quality and flavor of the finished dish.
