Egg-Dipped Fried Bread (French Toast Sticks)

A childhood-favorite breakfast made from toasted bread. This light, tasty breakfast of egg-dipped fried bread is fun to make with the kids. You can also make it sweet by adding sugar to the egg-and-milk mixture, or by sprinkling sugar over the toasted bread once it's done.

Cooking method

Cooking time: 15 min
  1. Step 1:

    Step 1

Gather the ingredients from the list. You can use fresh bread or slightly stale bread; some people also make this with rye or bran bread. We'll fry it in butter, so use a good one. I'm making the plainest version, but you can make it sweet too, so keep some sugar handy to taste. Have a deep, wide bowl and a skillet ready.

  2. Step 2:

    Step 2

Cut a loaf of white bread into slices about 1/2 inch (1 cm) thick — I just buy it pre-sliced. In a deep bowl, beat the egg lightly and add salt to taste (or sugar, if you're making the sweet version). Pour in the milk and stir the mixture together.

  3. Step 3:

    Step 3

Dip each slice of white bread into the mixture and leave it in the bowl. Keep dipping the slices until all the liquid is used up.

  4. Step 4:

    Step 4

Heat a skillet over medium heat, add the butter, and wait until it melts completely.

  5. Step 5:

    Step 5

Lay the egg-dipped slices in the hot buttered skillet and fry until golden on the first side, then gently flip and brown the other side. Keep the heat at medium so the bread doesn't burn and the butter doesn't scorch and turn bitter.

  6. Step 6:

    Step 6

Serve the fried bread right away. It's a meal on its own — pair it with sausages or hot cereal, or simply top it with sugar, jam, or honey. Serve with hot tea or coffee.

  • This kind of breakfast is one we all know from childhood — who didn't grow up with these fried slices of bread?! They take just minutes to make and disappear in seconds. They used to be served plain; when I was a kid we always sprinkled them with sugar. These days you'll see them served with honey, caramel, or jam, topped with fruit and berries — banana being the most popular. There are savory versions too, with cheese, sausage, cured salmon, or ham. They're usually pan-fried, but you can also make them in the oven, a slow cooker, or even the microwave.
