Cooking method

  1. Step 1:

    Step 1

How do you make rice baked in foil in the oven? Gather your ingredients. Any rice will work. Basmati is one of the driest, so it needs a touch more liquid than short-grain varieties. You can swap the water for any vegetable broth.

  2. Step 2:

    Step 2

Cover the rice with hot water and let it sit for 10–15 minutes. Then drain and rinse the rice thoroughly, rubbing it between your hands to wash out as much starch as possible.

  3. Step 3:

    Step 3

Drain the water off the clean rice. The rice should turn noticeably whiter.

  4. Step 4:

    Step 4

Heat the vegetable oil in a skillet and sauté the rinsed rice in it, stirring constantly. Don't crank the heat all the way up—keep it a little above medium. The grains should soak up the oil and turn translucent.

  5. Step 5:

    Step 5

Transfer the sautéed rice to an ovenproof dish. Pour in salted hot water or vegetable broth. Level the rice so it's spread as evenly as possible across the dish.

  6. Step 6:

    Step 6

Cover the rice-filled dish with a sheet of foil cut to size.

  7. Step 7:

    Step 7

Put the rice in an oven preheated to 350°F (180°C) and let it bake for about 30–40 minutes. Then taste the rice—it should be soft. If it's still firm, keep baking. Serve the finished rice hot with all kinds of gravies, sauces, curries, and salads. Enjoy!

  • If you like, you can add your favorite spices to taste while sautéing the rice. Freshly ground black pepper, ground paprika (plain or smoked), or curry all work well. A little turmeric will give the rice a lovely yellow color. Instead of vegetable oil, you can use butter, or better yet, ghee (clarified butter).
