French-Style Meat with Potatoes in a Slow Cooker

Fast, simple, and delicious — a hearty family dinner! This was my first time making French-style meat with potatoes in a slow cooker, and I was really pleased. It saves a ton of time and tastes no different from meat baked in the oven. You can use any cut of meat, just adjust the temperature and timing.

Cooking method

  1. Step 1:

    Step 1

How do you make French-style meat with potatoes in a slow cooker? Start with the pork — I'm using neck, which is more tender and nicely marbled. Pound it lightly. I salted it right away, about 1/2 teaspoon.

  2. Step 2:

    Step 2

Peel the onion and slice it into rings.

  3. Step 3:

    Step 3

Peel the potatoes too and slice them into rounds.

  4. Step 4:

    Step 4

I also cut the meat into strips — it makes serving portions easier.

  5. Step 5:

    Step 5

Lay the meat in the bottom of the slow cooker pot.

  6. Step 6:

    Step 6

    Layer the onion on top.

  7. Step 7:

    Step 7

Add the potatoes on top and salt them lightly.

  8. Step 8:

    Step 8

Cut the cherry tomatoes into thirds and scatter them on top. You can also use one regular tomato sliced into rounds.

  9. Step 9:

    Step 9

Pipe a crisscross layer of mayonnaise over the top.

  10. Step 10:

    Step 10

    Grate the cheese.

  11. Step 11:

    Step 11

Sprinkle the cheese over the top. Set the pot in the slow cooker and run the Bake setting for 1 hour.

  12. Step 12:

    Step 12

After an hour, turn it off and take it out. The meat is ready. Enjoy!

  • Keep in mind that the cooking time and setting here are approximate. Every slow cooker runs differently — even identical models from the same maker can behave their own way. Before trying a new dish in yours, read the manual, then practice with dishes you already know before moving on to new ones, dialing in the setting and time for your own appliance.
  • Homemade mayonnaise is better — tastier and healthier. You'll find some great homemade mayonnaise recipes here. You can also use sour cream or plain yogurt instead of mayonnaise, on their own or mixed with mayonnaise in any ratio you like, to cut down on calories.
  • Since everyone's tolerance for salty, sweet, bitter, spicy, sour, and hot flavors is different, always add spices and seasonings to your own taste. When you're using a seasoning for the first time, remember that some are especially easy to overdo (chili pepper, for example).
