Spicy Stir-Fried Beef with Chili

A spicy, savory, aromatic beef dish for anyone who loves Asian flavors! Stir-fries like this one have become weeknight favorites all over — and it's easy to see why. Beyond the bold, punchy taste, they come together in just minutes, which is exactly what busy cooks need. This spicy beef, sometimes called Chinese-style beef, is ready almost before you know it. It's just as at home on an everyday table as it is at a dinner party — that peppery, garlicky, slightly fiery bite wins everyone over.

Cooking method

Cooking time: 30 min
  1. Step 1:

    Step 1

Gather the ingredients for the dish. Tenderloin is the best cut of beef to use here, and the meat should be as fresh as possible.

  2. Step 2:

    Step 2

Rinse the beef well, pat it dry with paper towels, and slice it into thin strips along the grain. Rinse the strips once more and pat them dry again.

  3. Step 3:

    Step 3

Make the marinade for the beef. Pour the soy sauce into a bowl and add the garlic (pressed or minced), ground ginger, and chili. If the chili seems too hot on its own, you can add just a pinch of ground hot pepper. If you like, toss in a handful of sesame seeds too — they'll add another layer of flavor. Stir, then add the beef to the marinade and let it sit for 15 minutes.

  4. Step 4:

    Step 4

Meanwhile, peel the onion and cut it into thin wedges (slivers). Feel free to add other vegetables to the stir-fry if you'd like.

  5. Step 5:

    Step 5

Pour the vegetable oil into a skillet or wok and heat it over high heat. Add the beef only once the oil is hot enough that it just begins to shimmer and wisp with smoke. Stir-fry the beef over high heat, tossing constantly, for about 5 minutes. Don't discard the marinade left in the bowl. Now add the sliced onion to the pan. Reduce the heat to medium, stir, and cook the meat and onion together for another 3 minutes.

  6. Step 6:

    Step 6

Pour the reserved marinade into the pan. Keep simmering the beef and onion in the sauce for about 5 more minutes, then turn off the heat. Serve the beef on its own or with a side. Rice or noodles make an ideal pairing for this spicy beef. Enjoy!
