Pork in Soy Sauce and Onion Gravy
A hearty meat dish for the everyday table! This savory, juicy pork is wonderful with fresh, still-warm bread. It's great on its own as a main, but you can also serve it with mashed potatoes or fresh or stewed vegetables.
Cooking method
-
Step 1:
For this dish, take a piece of pork — shoulder is ideal, with a little fat along the edge. Cut the pork into medium-sized pieces.
-
Step 2:
Heat a skillet until hot and add a little vegetable oil. Sear the pork pieces on all sides until they develop an appetizing browned crust.
-
Step 3:
Peel the onions, rinse them in cold water, and cut into half-rings. The more onion you use, the tastier and juicier the dish will be — ideally, use about as much onion as meat. Add the sliced onion to the meat, stir, and fry everything together for 5–7 minutes.
-
Step 4:
Pour in a little soy sauce. Add salt to taste (keeping in mind the soy sauce is already salty) and the dried spices. Stir carefully so the hot fat doesn't spatter.
-
Step 5:
If the meat is a bit tough, add a little water. Then cover and simmer over low heat until the meat is done, about 10–15 minutes. If you'd like more gravy in the finished dish, add extra water. The meat goes beautifully with any side dish. Enjoy!
