Skillet-Braised Turkey with Vegetables
Really tasty, really easy, wholesome, juicy, a family dinner. Skillet-braised turkey with vegetables is so simple to make it's almost surprising. You can put it together with whatever you have on hand. The vegetables and meat soak up each other's juices, so it comes out wonderfully juicy!
Cooking method
-
Step 1:
How do you braise turkey with vegetables in a skillet? Start by gathering the ingredients on the list. Feel free to add to or swap out the vegetables to your taste. Instead of herbes de Provence, you can use an Italian blend.
-
Step 2:
Wash the turkey, pat it dry, and cut it into medium pieces. You can use large or small breast fillets or thigh meat, or swap in chicken.
-
Step 3:
Wash and dry all the vegetables. Cut the zucchini into quarters. Which zucchini works best? Go for young ones with tender skin. Wash and peel them, though you can leave very thin skin on. If you're using more mature zucchini, cut off the tough peel and scoop out the seedy center.
-
Step 4:
Seed the bell pepper and cut it into strips. Use any color pepper you like.
-
Step 5:
Cut the half onion into half rings.
-
Step 6:
Finely chop the garlic with a knife.
-
Step 7:
Peel the carrot and cut it into half-moons or matchsticks.
-
Step 8:
In a deep, heavy-bottomed skillet, heat half the vegetable oil. Add the turkey and fry, stirring, until golden, about 10 minutes. At the end, season the meat with salt and pepper. Remove the cooked meat from the pan.
-
Step 9:
Add the carrot to the pan and fry it in the remaining oil, stirring, for about 5 minutes.
-
Step 10:
Add the bell pepper and zucchini and fry everything together for about 3 more minutes.
-
Step 11:
Return the meat to the pan. Add the garlic. Pour in the hot water. Season everything with salt and pepper to taste and stir.
-
Step 12:
Bring the turkey and vegetables to a boil, reduce the heat to low, and simmer everything together, covered, for about 20 minutes.
-
Step 13:
Ten minutes before it's done, sprinkle the turkey and vegetables with herbes de Provence and stir. Adjust the salt and pepper to taste if needed.
-
Step 14:
Serve the finished turkey right away, garnished with fresh herbs. Enjoy!
- Every oil is only good up to a certain temperature, its smoke point, beyond which it starts to burn and forms toxic compounds, including carcinogens. Choose an oil with a high smoke point for frying.
- You can swap the turkey for chicken or any other meat you like. Just keep in mind that the cooking time and calorie count will change.
- Since everyone's preference for salt, sweetness, bitterness, heat, and tang is different, always add spices and seasonings to your own taste! And if you're using a seasoning for the first time, remember that some are especially easy to overdo (chili pepper, for one).
