Lazy Cabbage Rolls (Unstuffed) Baked in the Oven
Easy "lazy" cabbage rolls with cabbage and ground meat. Another familiar two-in-one dish: make these unstuffed cabbage rolls and there's no need to fuss over a side, since they're the main and the side all at once. The flavor takes you right back to childhood — the kind of thing you'd find in the school cafeteria and at home alike. They're simple to make, even if the number of steps makes it look like a lot.
Cooking method
-
Step 1:
Gather all your ingredients. Any ground meat works, but a little chicken in the mix makes the rolls juicier. In place of tomato paste, you can use ketchup or canned tomatoes in their juice.
-
Step 2:
Cover the rice with boiling water and cook until tender. Rinse under cold water.
-
Step 3:
Finely shred the cabbage.
-
Step 4:
Pour boiling water over the cabbage and let it sit for 15 minutes to soften. Then drain and squeeze out the excess liquid.
-
Step 5:
Peel and grate the carrot on the coarse side of a grater.
-
Step 6:
Peel and finely chop the onion.
-
Step 7:
Sauté the chopped carrot and onion in oil in a skillet until soft.
-
Step 8:
In a bowl, combine the ground meat, cooked rice, one-third of the sautéed vegetables, and the cabbage. Mix everything together and season with salt and pepper to taste.
-
Step 9:
Shape the mixture into patties and set them out in a row in a greased baking dish. Bake in a preheated oven for 15 minutes.
-
Step 10:
Stir the remaining carrot and onion together with the tomato paste, add the water, and simmer for ten minutes.
-
Step 11:
Take the cabbage rolls out of the oven, pour the sauce over them, cover with foil, and return to the oven for 20 minutes.
-
Step 12:
Serve the finished lazy cabbage rolls hot, with a dollop of sour cream.
