Lazy Cabbage Rolls with Napa Cabbage in Pickled-Tomato Sauce

Just because these cabbage rolls are "lazy" doesn't mean they're any less delicious! Their mild flavor is set off by a zesty sauce, and the napa cabbage gives them an especially delicate taste.

  • How do you make lazy cabbage rolls with napa cabbage?
  • Another experiment. I love lazy cabbage rolls but I'm not a fan of white cabbage in them, so I swapped in napa cabbage. And if you have leftover pickled tomatoes that, frankly, you've grown a little tired of over the winter, try making this zesty sauce (spicy, but in moderation!) — it's a perfect match for the rolls. 1. Peel the onion and garlic, dice them, and fry in vegetable oil until golden. Peel the tomatoes, cut them into cubes, and add them to the onion and garlic along with their juices. Simmer for 5–7 minutes. 2. Stir the flour into the tomatoes, mix quickly, and add hot water in a thin stream, stirring constantly. Add pepper (and salt, if needed), sugar, and the bay leaf. Simmer for 10 minutes. 3. Stir the sour cream into the sauce, mix well, and cook another 2–3 minutes, then turn off the heat. 4. Mix the ground meat with the cooked rice and finely shredded napa cabbage, then season with salt and pepper. Knead the mixture well. Shape the cabbage rolls and arrange them in a baking dish. Remove the bay leaf from the sauce and pour it over the rolls. Cover the dish with a piece of foil and bake for about 40 minutes at 400°F (200°C). Then take out the rolls, remove the foil, sprinkle with grated cheese, and return them to the oven until the cheese is fully melted and golden. Enjoy. P.S. For a smoother sauce, you can blend it.
