Cooking method

Cooking time: 15 min
  1. Step 1:

    Step 1

Gather the listed ingredients. You can use any frozen berries: strawberries, blackberries, lingonberries, blueberries, and so on. If you use currants — red, black, or white — it's best not to add citric acid or lemon juice to the compote, since those berries already have a pronounced tartness. You can use a little less sugar than the recipe calls for, or a little more — go by your own taste.

  2. Step 2:

    Step 2

Put the frozen berries in a pot or a bowl.

  3. Step 3:

    Step 3

Cover them with cold water and remove any stems, twigs, and hulls — from the strawberries, for example. Rinse several times.

  4. Step 4:

    Step 4

Then add the granulated sugar to the pot — you can pair it with vanilla sugar if you like a hint of vanilla in your drinks.

  5. Step 5:

    Step 5

Pour in hot water and set the pot on the stove, covered, over high heat. Bring the liquid to a boil, reduce the heat to medium, and cover the pot halfway.

  6. Step 6:

    Step 6

Cook the compote for 10–12 minutes from the moment it boils. The berries should release their color and aroma into the liquid and float to the top.

  7. Step 7:

    Step 7

Turn off the heat and let the drink cool for 15–20 minutes, uncovered. During this time the berries should sink to the bottom.

  8. Step 8:

    Step 8

Pour the frozen-berry compote into glasses, a pitcher, cups, and so on, and serve. The drink is delicious both warm in winter and over ice in summer.

  • You can make frozen-berry compote any time you have the ingredients on hand. It quenches thirst beautifully and gives your body a dose of healthy vitamins and minerals. That's exactly why it's best not to cook the compote for longer than 15 minutes!
