Cooking method

  1. Step 1:

    Step 1

Gather everything you need to make mashed potatoes. Wash the potatoes well under running water, scrubbing off any soil and dirt.

  2. Step 2:

    Step 2

Peel the washed potatoes with a vegetable peeler and rinse them. Cut large potatoes into 2–3 pieces. Put the peeled potatoes in a suitably sized pot and add enough water to cover them. Set the pot over the heat and bring it to a boil. Boil the potatoes until soft — this takes about 20 minutes. Salt them to taste.

  3. Step 3:

    Step 3

You can check that the potatoes are done by piercing them with a knife or fork — they should pierce easily or even fall apart. Drain the hot water off the potatoes and add the butter.

  4. Step 4:

    Step 4

Mash the potatoes with a potato masher. The butter melts right into the hot potatoes, flavoring them through and through.

  5. Step 5:

    Step 5

Then pour the warm milk into the mashed potatoes and keep mashing so the milk is fully worked in and absorbed.

  6. Step 6:

    Step 6

By adjusting how much milk you add, you can control how thick or smooth the mash turns out. Serve this potato side dish with any meat or fish. Enjoy!

  • For extra flavor while the potatoes cook, add a bay leaf or a couple of garlic cloves to the water. For a lighter version, mash the potatoes without milk or cream — just save a little of the cooking water and work it in bit by bit. But the richer the milk or cream you add, the fluffier the mash will be. You can stir a little sautéed, finely chopped onion or carrot into the finished mash, or add chopped mushrooms, grated cheese, or fresh herbs. Each variation gives this familiar side a new flavor. Enjoy!
