Cooking method
-
Step 1:
How do you make a mashed potato and ground meat casserole in the oven? Gather your ingredients. Any ground meat works: pork, beef, or a mix. You can also use ground chicken.
-
Step 2:
Wash and peel the potatoes and cut them into small pieces. Put them in a pot, cover with water, and bring to a boil. Salt the potatoes and cook over moderate heat until tender. Test with a knife — if it slides in easily, they're done.
-
Step 3:
Drain the cooked potatoes. Mash them with a potato masher, adding the warm milk and butter. Set aside a little butter for greasing the dish. Let the mash cool slightly.
-
Step 4:
Meanwhile, make the meat filling. Wash the peeled onion and cut it into small cubes.
-
Step 5:
In a skillet with a little vegetable oil, fry the onion until half done, stirring now and then.
-
Step 6:
Add the ground meat to the skillet. Fry it with the onion over moderate heat, breaking up the clumps well. Stir and cook until the meat changes color.
-
Step 7:
Salt the meat and add the tomato paste, ground black pepper, or any spices you like. Mix well.
-
Step 8:
Fry the meat for about 10 more minutes.
-
Step 9:
Beat the egg into the warm mashed potatoes and mash or stir thoroughly so the egg is evenly worked through.
-
Step 10:
Grease the sides and bottom of a baking dish with butter. Spread in half the mashed potatoes and level it with a spoon.
-
Step 11:
Spread the cooked meat evenly on top.
-
Step 12:
Cover the meat layer with the rest of the mashed potatoes and smooth it out.
-
Step 13:
Bake the casserole in an oven preheated to 350°F (180°C) for 25-30 minutes. Set the mode and time to suit your oven. Before baking, you can score a pattern into the surface with a fork if you like.
-
Step 14:
Serve the casserole hot with sour cream, butter, or your favorite sauce. Enjoy!
- You can swap the tomato paste for canned tomatoes in their own juice, fresh tomatoes, or ketchup.
- Keep in mind that ovens vary. Your temperature and time may differ from what's given here. For any baked dish to turn out well, make use of the helpful information on how ovens behave!
- To give the oven time to reach temperature, turn it on ahead (10-20 minutes before you start cooking).
