Cinnamon Oranges Dessert
An incredibly tasty, simple, last-minute dessert! Cinnamon oranges couldn't be easier to make. You'll need just three ingredients, not counting the spices. Instead of sugar, you can use honey or a sweetener. This dish brings a festive, holiday mood in any season!
Cooking method
-
Step 1:
How do you make cinnamon oranges? Gather the ingredients. "Less-than-perfect" oranges — sour, small, slightly past their prime — are great for this dessert. For desserts like this, I prefer cane sugar, which gives the dish a pronounced caramel flavor, but use whatever you have. You can adjust the amount of cinnamon to your liking.
-
Step 2:
Wash the oranges thoroughly under running water, ideally with baking soda — fruit is usually treated with wax to keep it from spoiling, and even though we won't use the peel, some of that coating can transfer to the fruit as you slice. Now slice the orange. I chose thin slices, but you can cut them thicker. You can also peel the orange first and then cut it into segments — but it's easier to cut with the peel on.
-
Step 3:
Now peel each slice (if you didn't peel the orange beforehand). Do this over a plate — we'll need all the juice that drips off the orange.
-
Step 4:
Peel all the orange slices this way. You can then cut them into halves or quarters to make them easier to eat — I left mine whole. Arrange the slices on a plate in a single layer.
-
Step 5:
Squeeze the juice from the lemon, remove the seeds, and measure out 2 tablespoons. Now you need orange juice: use the juice that collected while peeling the slices, and squeeze more from any unattractive slices and ends. You'll need the same amount of orange juice as lemon juice — 2 tablespoons.
-
Step 6:
In a separate bowl, mix the sugar, cinnamon, and both juices. Stir well and let it sit for a bit so the sugar crystals dissolve completely.
-
Step 7:
Pour the mixture over the orange slices. Use a spoon to spread the juice well over all the pieces. Let the dessert sit for a bit so the orange soaks up all the flavors, then serve.
- I was skeptical of this recipe at first — so simple, could it really be good? But the cinnamon dressing genuinely rescued the sour oranges! We ate every last bite. You can serve grapefruit the same way. Instead of lemon juice, you can use lime juice.
