  1. Step 1:

    Step 1

How do you make this jam? There are several recipes for gooseberry-orange jam — quick no-cook versions, cooked versions, with green or red gooseberries, with other fruit added. They all turn out delicious and healthy. Start by gathering your ingredients.

  2. Step 2:

    Step 2

Use any variety and color of gooseberry you like. Rinse the berries well under running water, drain them in a colander, and let all the water run off. Discard any damaged or gray-spotted berries, and trim off the stem and blossom ends. You can also make this jam from frozen gooseberries — just prep them before freezing, then thaw them when you're ready.

  3. Step 3:

    Step 3

The orange not only gives the jam a rich flavor but makes it more nutritious and vitamin-rich. For a brighter citrus flavor, use the orange with its peel on. Oranges do have a characteristic bitterness, but it's easy to remove: just scrub them with a brush and a little soap under running water, then either blanch them in boiling water for 15 minutes or cover them with cold water and let them soak for 12 hours.

  4. Step 4:

    Step 4

Then cut the orange, peel and all, into large pieces and remove the seeds. Run the orange and gooseberries through a meat grinder (a blender works too). Depending on your preference, you can purée it into a smooth, jelly-like consistency or leave it chunky with pieces of berry and fruit. Transfer the fruit mixture to a pot or deep enameled dish, add the measured sugar, and stir.

  5. Step 5:

    Step 5

Set it over the heat, bring to a boil over low heat while stirring constantly, and cook for about 20 minutes. Ladle the jam into clean, sterilized jars and seal with sterile lids. Wrap the jars in a warm blanket and let them cool completely at room temperature.

  6. Step 6:

    Step 6

Store the jam in a cool place, or serve it right away. Thanks to the citrus, which acts as an extra preservative, this jam keeps for a long time. Enjoy!

  • Gooseberry and orange go together beautifully. The result is a delicious treat with pleasant citrus notes and a gentle tartness.
