Layered Salad with Hard Cheese

A tasty, simple, quick vegetable salad with hard cheese! No holiday table is complete without salads and appetizers, and most of them feature hard cheese — it boosts the flavor and gives a dish a savory, finished taste. This salad brings together what seem like mismatched ingredients, but the bite of green radish and the tang of green apple come together nicely, mellowed by the hard cheese.

  • How do you make a layered salad with hard cheese? Boil the potatoes and carrots in their skins, and hard-boil the eggs. Cool the vegetables and eggs and peel them. Peel the radish and apple. Grate all the ingredients on the coarse side of a box grater into separate bowls, since the salad goes together in layers. First layer: boiled potato, spread with mayonnaise. Next, the radish and apple. Mayonnaise. Grated cheese. Mayonnaise. Scatter over grated or finely chopped boiled egg. Spread with mayonnaise again. Top with a layer of grated boiled carrot. Salt to taste. Garnish with a sprig of parsley. A very simple but very tasty salad is ready — your guests are sure to appreciate its unusual, interesting flavor. Enjoy!
  • Mayonnaise is better homemade — tastier and better for you. There are some good homemade mayo recipes worth trying. You can also dress this with sour cream or plain yogurt instead of mayonnaise, on their own or mixed with mayo in whatever ratio you like, which cuts the calories.
  • How do you hard-boil eggs? To keep them from cracking, start them in cold water over low heat. Boil for 9 minutes after the water comes to a boil, then transfer to cold water to cool — the sudden temperature change makes them easier to peel.
