Snowman Salad

A fun, whimsical way to present a holiday salad. It's hard to wow anyone with a salad these days, even one made with exotic ingredients. But the presentation can win over any guest. Winter is full of celebrations that call for a spread of tasty dishes, so try something different and shape your salad like a snowman. It'll surprise the grown-ups and the kids alike—and if the kids love the idea, you can make them a fruit salad in the same shape.

Cooking method

Cooking time: 15 min
  1. Step 1:

    Step 1

Gather your ingredients. The whole point here is serving the salad in the shape of a snowman, so you can use any salad you like. The key is that the ingredients work together and the salad holds its shape.

  2. Step 2:

    Step 2

Finely chop the ham. Grate any hard cheese on the medium side of a box grater. Hard-boil the eggs, cool them, and grate them.

  3. Step 3:

    Step 3

In a deep bowl, combine the ham, eggs, cheese, and mayonnaise. Mix thoroughly and season with salt to taste. It's best to chill the salad in the fridge before shaping it.

  4. Step 4:

    Step 4

Decorate the plate or salad bowl with sprigs of dill to suggest fir branches, and dust the area where the snowman will sit with grated cheese for "snow." With clean or gloved hands, divide the mixture into two or three unequal parts. Shape one into a ball, flatten it slightly, and set it on the plate. Do the same with the remaining balls—one or two more, as you like.

  5. Step 5:

    Step 5

Slice the olives and arrange the rounds down the snowman's belly for "buttons," and use olives for the eyes too. Make the mouth and nose from carrot, red pepper, or tomato. The hat is up to your imagination—a piece of fresh cucumber, pepper, or whatever you like. Parsley sprigs make the arms. Chill the finished salad before serving.
