Crabapple Compote in a Three-Liter Jar for Winter

This crabapple compote is just right for the kids. You can toss in some dark berries for color if you like, but that's optional — the compote is delicious all on its own.

  • Pick the prettiest, smoothest crabapples, with no wormholes. Wash them very well, ideally with a brush — you can pull off the stems while you're at it. Sterilize the jar and fill it one-third to one-half full with crabapples. Pour boiling water over them and let them sit for 5 minutes (10 minutes if your crabapples are large). Drain the water into a pot, add the sugar, bring it to a boil, pour it back over the crabapples, and seal the jar right away. Store at room temperature.
