  • Hot chocolate has always been one of kids' favorite treats, and grown-ups love to indulge in this slightly bittersweet, rich, comforting drink too. You can make it lots of ways, but if you have an espresso machine at home, you can use it to whip up a cup of delicious, rich hot chocolate that lifts your mood — and it's good for your heart and circulation, too. To make hot chocolate in an espresso machine, you'll need one with a milk-frothing feature (a steam wand or "cappuccinatore"): milk goes into the frothing pitcher and gets whipped into foam, a feature found on nearly every modern machine and used for cappuccino and lattes. For the chocolate itself, you'll want milk — whole milk or higher-fat milk is best, since it makes the hot chocolate thicker and richer — plus a hot chocolate drink mix (look for it in the supermarket near the teas and coffees). Here's how it goes: pour whole milk into the frothing pitcher and warm it slightly, then add the chocolate mix. Reattach the pitcher and turn on the frother, which blends the chocolate into the warming milk — the longer you heat it, the thicker the drink. Once it's frothed, pour it into a cup, add a little sugar and a pinch of ground cinnamon, and stir well. Garnish with grated dark chocolate on top if you like. Enjoy!
