  • You'll also need a candy mold (a dedicated one or a silicone baking mold) and candy sticks — though you can skip the sticks if you use a silicone mold. Put the sugar in a saucepan, add the water, and stir in the vinegar. The vinegar keeps the sugar from crystallizing; without it, the candy comes out cloudy. Bring the mixture to a boil, then lower the heat. Cook until it thickens and changes color — the sweet syrup turns reddish. Pour the finished syrup into the cavities of a butter-greased mold and insert the sticks. Only once the candies have fully cooled should you unmold them and pop out your homemade hard candies. I made mine without sticks, in a silicone candy mold.
